In these uncertain times in the world, it is important to go back to basics in our yoga sadhana and remember how simple and effective these practices are.
I have chosen to focus on Pranayama this year, as in the more than 50 years I have been teaching Yoga, the most frequent comments that students, who have been practising for many years, have made is “You taught me how to breathe”
Our first breath into our bodies is when we are born, and our last breath out is when we leave this earthly coil. All the breaths we breathe in between are mostly unconscious and not always of the best quality.
We will address the importance and benefits of breathing consciously and correctly, starting with basic yogic breathing and moving on to other pranayamas, appropriate for the time of year, observing the powerful effect that systematic practice has on body, mind and prana. This helps us appreciate the importance of this often overlooked aspect of sadhana is as a necessary preparation for undisturbed states of pratyahara, dharana and dhyana.
